Most people struggle with three basic issues in life:
Identity ~ Who am I?
Importance ~ Do I matter?
And Impact ~ What is my place in life?
A.A.L.I.V.E. was created to provide options to enhance and improve the lives of Adults with Autism and other special needs by:
- Offering affordable housing options to allow the choice for Adults with Autism to live in an independent setting with their individualized support needs. Currently, the majority of Adults with Autism do not hold the resources necessary to live apart from their families. The A.A.L.I.V.E. organization is dedicated to offering Adults with Autism this much-deserved choice.
- Nurturing and funding social outings for Adults with Autism. For example, a bowling and pizza event, attending a sporting event, going to the movies, etc. These types of social opportunities will assist in the integration of Adults with Autism in our community; and, allow for them to have experiences that otherwise would not be available. Shared socialization is an essential component in an individualÕs ability to live with fulfillment and esteem.
- Offering awareness seminars to educate our community to understand the characteristics of Autism and to promote an acceptance of their very special and unique Way of Life.
After researching the resources and programs available to Adults with Autism, we have discovered that currently there is no program developed to foster the needs of the Adult Autistic community. Many services are available through school districts and government entities; however, most services cease when an individual reaches age 21. Often, families require services that go beyond age 21. Presently, many Adults that are diagnosed within the Autism Spectrum end up unknowingly committing crimes because of their deficient social awareness of right and wrong. Without structured activities, programs and schedules, the majority of our Adults with Autism can not function in our society. This reality is frightening.
In our effort to insure that the needs of our Adults with Autism are continued; and that these individuals are not placed in inappropriate settings, we have created A.A.L.I.V.E.
